You will have to sell your firstborn, but after that, just limbs and minor organs. You should be able to keep the rest of your children.

Maintenance will depend on if he's able to handle most of it himself. Things like fluid changes, batteries, and sensors are easy to DIY. You'll need a code scanner for sensor problems, and the parts/fluids cost more than an average car. If you take it to the dealer for everything you'll spend 3 times as much with parts markup compared to online vendors, and the labor.

A used modern BMW with a V10???

May I recommend a dozen high-mileage Mercury Topazes instead?

Would love to get down there if I can find the time, but I'm still three hours away in a different state. I'll give you a heads up though, I may have a chance to head down mid/late february.

have you gone over to bimmerforums?

im sure there's at least one or two knowledgeable folks over there to tell what to expect to go wrong. and at 80k miles, stuff is going to start going wrong. not because its poorly built, but just because parts have lifespans.

we may seem friendly over here, but there isnt really a lot of specific knowledge with multiple data points on one marque here.

when things are going well for my cars i hang around here, when they're not, im over on the specific make forums.

be sure you and your dad do the due diligence, and see how this car matches up with the recommended maintenance schedule, and if any known problem parts/areas have been addressed. also, pre-purchase inspection. will tell you the general state of the car, plus how/if the engine may have been abused.

also at 78k miles, is it just coming up on an 80k mile service? or has it just had the 75k service (i dont know the schedule for these cars.)

consider all of these factors before you go in with an offer.

You will will when it fries a clutch. If you can find a manual one, you'll have less drama. Down here in Australia, we only get SMG. Twice, I've nearly bought an 06' M5 to go with my E39. And every time I get a pre- purchase inspection, they tell me I need to spend 7k on the box. I'll do it when I don't have to daily it me thinks. thrown away 600 bucks in inspections in the last 2 years. Still love the shape and dat V10 though.

Oh we will take it to a dealer to have it inspected before we buy it. There is a VERY large BMW dealer here in KC also we are looking at 996 911's. He also said if we got one, a 996 that is, he would replace the IMS bearing first thing no matter what.

The M5 did. The M6 I believe did as well, but I think it's less common than the M5 manual.

good idea.

make sure you price out that ims swap before you make the purchase. just had mine done along with a new clutch and all the "while youre in there" stuff. wasn't too happy with needing a new flywheel, and ended up well into 4 digits.

the 996s though are great cars. have had mine for 4.5 years now and have put nearly 60k miles on her.

Ya my 996 would be a daily but going from a Coyote Mustang GT to a small flat 6. I don't think I would get used to it quickly thats why I'm looking at the M6.

If you are in the u.s, I think they accounted for 20% of sales in the M5. Not sure on the M6. You can get a 645i Manual for very little money as an alternative....
